Trundles Isuzu MU-X Family Wagon - Trundles Automotive

Trundles Isuzu MU-X Family Wagon

If you can't stand the thought of a boring family vehicle and want to be able to pop some curbs at the school pickup then this should hopefully give you some inspiration!

With 7 comfortable leather seats, a roof mounted DVD player, enough space for carseats and the reliable 4JJ Isuzu motor you can hardly go wrong with the Isuzu MU-X. Except for the fact that in its stock form it can be rather boring...

Enter the Trundles MU-X, which seemed at first to be a practical and comfortable family car. But anyone who knows the Trundles knows that it wouldn't stay that way for long...

First up was the rims and tyres. Knowing that this would be doing a lot of road k's we decided on the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 as we find them pretty unbeatable in terms of looks, performance on and off -road and also mileage!
We went for a 285/75/16 (33") instead of trying to squish a 35" under the poor thing and they are fitted to a 16x8 0 offset Deegan 38 Rim (which is unfortunately now discontinued).

For the lift we wanted something that would give us a big lift, that was also comfortable so we picked the Dobinsons MRR Shocks.
With the lift set at 4" Front and 3" Rear the MU-X has a much more aggressive look and there is plenty of clearance for the bigger tyres (with a little trimming)

Performance Upgrades

Now that the MU-X is sitting and looking better it was time to get into the fun stuff and start seeing how far we can push the mum wagon!

First up was some of our common 4JJ upgrades:

And then some of our newer upgrades that we wanted to do some testing on:

  • Trundles +30 Injectors
  • MSE/Trundles VNT Turbo Upgrade
  • Unichip Piggyback/ECU Recal

These upgrades resulted in figures of 250hp/760nm compared to the factory figures of 130hp/300nm.

More than enough grunt for the school pick up, the occasional burnout and also makes a 0-100km sprint in 6.2 seconds! Which is pretty good considering the GVM before mods is 2750kg. We've even found the fuel economy to be better than stock making it a great vehicle for family trips.

To complete the vehicle we also added the following:

All in all we are very happy with the way this has turned out, we've taken it to Mudfest and driven past stuck vehicles with ease.
We've drag raced the odd Landcruiser and kept up and even come first. It hauls the kids and all their gear around with ease and it also does the airport drop offs so we don't need to take our customers in the courtesy corolla..

If you like the sound of some of these modifications, get in touch - we would be be happy to help you out! A lot of these products also cross over to the D-Max so we can help you there as well.
