Nissan Common Rail Diesels are notorious for issues with this factory part leaking. These relief valves are a simple spring that is designed to relieve pressure as it exceeds a predetermined pressure.

Unfortunately as pressure is continually applied to this spring it fatigues and does not have the ability to maintain even stock pressures.
With tuning these vehicles its common to run higher rail pressure, and this spring further fatigues, causing you to lose valuable rail pressure.

This causes the Common Rail Pump to work harder to keep up the pressure to the injectors as it has to also supply enough pressure to overcome the leaking fuel relief valve which will in turn keep letting more pressure out making it a never ending cycle causing huge strain on your Common Rail Pump. This will normally throw a P1272 code.
